Public Health Dynamics Workshop (PHD 2018)

March 5-7, 2018

ICMR Headquarters, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi, India
Conference Hall, Room Number 301

This invited workshop is co-sponsored and hosted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in partnership with the Public Health Dynamics Laboratory (PHDL) at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, and SHARE INDIA. The workshop is partially supported by a U.S. Fogarty International Center eCapacity educational grant* that focuses on building disease modeling capabilities in India.  These modeling capabilities underpin development of evidence-based health policy, health planning, and emergent epidemic responses.

This hands-on workshop will focus on use of FRED (A Framework for Reconstructing Epidemiological Dynamics), an agent-based modeling program developed at the PHDL. FRED utilizes a synthetic population that mimics the population structure and includes details of the education system and other patterns in the population and can be adapted to acute infectious diseases, chronic infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases.   In addition to static prediction of epidemic outcomes – including epidemic curve, disease incidence, and treatment needs – the program can be used for queries on various “what if..” scenarios such as  “what if we closed preschools for a month” or “what if vaccine production is behind schedule”.  FRED can provide information on how these scenarios influence the epidemic and health service needs, among other things.  FRED is currently being used in several countries to provide information that assists those involved in health policy and planning.

Other types of disease modeling programs will also be discussed including disease clustering, data standardization, access and integration for epidemic modeling, and spatial microsimulation.

Participants will learn how to develop modeling assumptions, assemble disease characteristics, parameterize models, develop synthetic populations, run models, and explore ways to apply the results. In addition to FRED, an Indian synthetic population, which was developed by Indian colleagues affiliated with the eCapacity program, will be available for use at the workshop.

While there is no fee to attend this workshop, invited participants must complete the registration form prior to the event.
