Scientific Director/Faculty

The Public Health Dynamics Laboratory (PHDL) at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health seeks a senior investigator/faculty to assume the position of Scientific Director. The appropriate person will be responsible for the technical and scientific leadership of a group of clinical and public health investigators who conduct research on the health of populations through mathematical modeling and simulation. The laboratory has specific expertise and skills in the mathematical modeling of infectious diseases, but is expanding its purview to include multiple chronic diseases, and the biologic and social determinants of health.

We seek a senior investigator at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, preferably with Tenure or in the Tenure Stream depending upon background and credentials, although we will consider applicants outside the tenure stream as well. We expect that a successful candidate will have a PhD in a computationally intensive area, such as Computational or Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or Engineering, but we will consider any field as along as a significant amount of the candidate’s work has involved modeling and simulation. This position will require that the candidate have experience in mathematical modeling of health phenomena at the population scale, computer science, research software design, optimization, and the management of a professional programming staff. We would also expect that the candidate would have experience in and a desire to continue teaching in graduate programs.

The successful candidate is expected to develop or continue a program of individual independent scientific research as well as collaborating with and mentoring junior faculty.

The PHDL is a multi-disciplinary laboratory within the Graduate School of Public Health, and PHDL faculty members have appointments in many different departments. The departmental home of the successful candidate will be determined by mutual agreement and where the academic fit is best.

Data Manager

The Public Health Dynamics Laboratory (PHDL) at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health is recruiting a data manager to contribute to the Project Tycho data infrastructure and to help the global health response against epidemic threats such as Ebola, Zika, and Dengue virus.

The Data Manger will assist in the design and development of the Project Tycho data acquisition workflow, including acquiring data on global population health from online country sources, standardizing data from heterogeneous formats and content into the common Project Tycho data format, integrating data into the Project Tycho data system, and disseminating data to the general public. The Data Manager will ensure a continuous acquisition and data quality monitoring process, using both manual and automated data processing algorithms. The Data Manager will be an integral part of the Project Tycho team that includes faculty, project coordinator, students and programming staff and will work closely with the Project Tycho database manager. The Data Manger will contribute to development of new data processing algorithms and procedures, to development of material for the Project Tycho website, and to a positive team atmosphere. The position requires familiarity with biomedical data, in particular population surveillance data, familiarity with databases, some familiarity or interest in automated data processing routines, familiarity with epidemiological or statistical research, Spanish language skills, and an independent, positive work attitude.
